It’s a tool you can use, not a solution to a problem all by itself. Learning How to Improve Self Esteem
Self esteem is not something we’re born with, it’s something we develop over time. For various reasons, some of us struggle with low self esteem. It’s important to learn how to improve self esteem but it’s not something that comes easily to everyone. Be patient with yourself and recognize that it will take some time. You can work on your own to develop better self esteem or you can work with a therapist for added information and support.
Tips on How to Improve Self Esteem
These simple tips on how to improve self esteem can make a big difference, but keep in mind that they will not cure a condition like depression, anorexia or bulimia. People with those conditions can still benefit from these techniques, but they will mostly likely require professional treatment as well.
- Identify something you do well and do it often.
- Take up a new hobby or learn a new skill.
- Do something to help others. Consider some sort of volunteer work.
- Do nice things for yourself – get a massage, buy a flattering new outfit, treat yourself to a long bubble bath.
- Spend time with people that help you feel good about yourself. If you don’t have friends like that, it’s time to find some.
- Seek professional help for conditions like depression, anxiety disorders, anorexia or bulimia. Those conditions affect self esteem.
How to Use Self Esteem Worksheets
You can use self esteem worksheets on your own or you can use them in conjunction with a professional therapist. You can use the worksheets as prompts for journal writing, if you like. You don’t have to share your answers with anyone but you might find it helpful to share some of them with a qualified therapist. Worksheets on self esteem can also be used in a support group setting.

This is our favorite self esteem worksheet. You can find others online and in self-help books, or ask a therapist for some. Simply answer these questions as honestly as you can. You can write as much or as little as you want about each question.
- Name five things you like about yourself. If you can’t think of five things, ask a trusted friend or therapist for help.
- What is something you do well?
- What is something difficult that you’ve learned to do?
- What is something others appreciate about you?
- What is something you like about your body? Think of something, even if it’s something very small, like “I have very straight teeth” or “I have nice fingernails.”
- What messages did you get about your value as a person when you were growing up? How did you get those messages?
- Do you think those messages were true? What evidence do you have to support them?
- Name three things that frequently make you feel bad about yourself.
- Name three things that frequently make you feel good about yourself.
- How can you decrease your exposure to things that make you feel bad about yourself and increase your exposure to things that make you feel good about yourself?
